Morning #1
May 14th, 2012
Saturday Night(may 12th) My new husband and I jumped on a plane and headed to Miami, FL.
When we arrived, it was 9am on May 13th(we lost 4 hours.) after searching for an outlet to charge our phones and calling my mom, we finally brushed our teeth and sat nearby our gate waiting for our flight to St Kitts Bastille, West Indies. Jake has been to Hawaii and I've been to Mexico, but other than that we've never been anywhere remotely tropical. When we arrived at the Miami airport from Washington, we were shocked by the temperature. It was SO cold. I hate air conditioning! I was so bummed because even though we were only there for a little while, I was still hoping to get a little taste of what to expect on the island. We finally boarded our flight. I sat next to an extremely kind Africa American lady. She got Jake and I our immigration forms since we were completely passed out when they were handed out and then helped me figure out how to fill them all out. after about 1 1/2 hours of flying, we finally looked out the window and saw what we'd been waititng so long to see- bright blue ocean and white sandy beaches! it was something out of a picture. After another hour our pilot FINALLY announced that we'd be landing in St Kitts soon. I was extremely sick from the flight and stress and eating fast food from the day before.. but nothing could ruin that moment of first stepping out of the plane and being hit by the humid, hot air of the Island. it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life.
After making our way through customs and saying goodbye to the nice lady from the plane, we headed outside to find Daisy, our cab driver, waiting for us. She drove us from the airport to a dock with a shuttle, and gave us a little history tour of the Island while we drove on the wrong side of an extremely dirty, dusty, pothole filled road. We learned that the major exports of St Kitts used to be rum and sugar cane, but both had eventually been shut down. You can still find it made some places on the island, though. this is also where we saw our first GREEN MONKEYS! They ran across the road.they were so tiny!
we finally arrived at the dock to find a boat with a few seats waiting for us and a few other passengers. the water was so perfect I could barely stop myself from immediately jumping off the dock. we finally headed out for the short ride from St Kitts to Nevis, which took about 6 minutes. The ride was extremely exciting! we went SO fast and the waves splashed us some of the time. We finally got our first realy glimpse of the Island that we would call home for the next 10 days. a huge volcano jutting out from the blue water, the caribbean on one side and the atlantic on the other. The sight actually made me want to cry. It was like Nothing I'd ever seen before.
When we arrived on Nevis, we were picked up by a cab driver who drove us to the office at Hurricane Cove Bungalows. Jake was stressed because he didn't understand that here, anything with 2 doors and 4wd is called a jeep. He was pretty dissapointed to discover our "jeep" was actually a suzuki. We finished getting checked in and headed up to "Seabuiscut".
We walked in to find a beautiful house set on a cliff overlooking the straight in between the two islands. we have 2 porches, one from the bedroom and one that connects from the livingroom to the front door. down a few steps is the HUGE pool and a bbq. The upper deck has a hammock, which I never wanted to get out of when I sat in it. the whole house is airy and open, and doesn't have any real windows. Just screens. the bed has a tulle canopy to keep bugs out. You can literally lay in bed and look at the caribbean.
it's strange how I've actually gone backwards.. it's 3:12am PST, and 6:12AM our time... yet I'm completely awake. bleh.
We jumped in the pool and took some really goofy underwater pictures, then showered and headed out for our first right handed driving experience. Jake actually did pretty well, but it was unnerving watching the cars drive at you on the wrong side of the road.
We drove to Sunshine's Cafe and had our first "killer bee" rum. It was delicious, but seeing as I don't really like more than 1 sip of alcohol, Jake finished mine off. I had a hamburger and caribbean salad. Jake had a chicken leg, caribbean salad(which I ate), and some rice/bean stuff that was SUPER good. it was definitely a fantastic first meal. We then layed in our chair/bed and watched the sun go down. I also touched a monkey. It wanted to climb on me, but it had poop on it so I didn't let it..
We headed back to "seabiscuit" and even though the sun hadn't even set, immediately fell into bed. Jake was asleep in about 4 minutes. I didn't fall asleep quite as fast, but woke up a few hours later and was postive it was morning... Apparently it was only 9pm. I heard a weird noise and was positive some kind of killer spider was coming to get me, so i made Jake go check. It turned out to be a gecko on the porch. Then we found a daddy long leg on the INSIDE of the netting around the bed, so I made Jake kill it and we tried to get some more sleep. I woke up around 5:30AM(here). The sun was just barely starting to peek over the water. I couldn't help but walk back and forth and back and forth looking from one side of the house to the other. It was so beautiful I couldn't believe it. The island looked so sleepy.
The whole ambiance here is so relaxed. Everyone says hi to everyone else, stores are closed early in the morning and on weekends, and the island is silent until midday. I don't think I ever want to leave, but I don't know how well Diesel would do here...
Well, I'm gonna try to wake Jake up and head out for some food now!
